OpenJDK has decided to permanently disable security manager (JSM/security-manager) starting JDK 24-- considering it as legacy. Java security manager is used extensively in Opensearch to sandbox Opensearch process. This sandboxing protects Opensearch process from restricting plugins access to system resources like files, network connections, environment variables, system properties, class-loading etc. It also protects Opensearch core (i.e itself) from vulnerabilities exposed from package dependencies.
With the dawn of security manager, there was a pressing need to develop alternatives to keep Opensearch as secure as it is/was with security manager. In this talk we explore various alternatives for Opensearch explored like Systemd, GraalVM, Java agent Interceptors and the mental model to pick the right alternatives.
